L.A. — Sports City Heaven

Listen, I still think the Raiders should have been the ONLY team brought back home to Los Angeles, but that’s neither here nor there. I was, in fact, saddened when they left Oakland, but Sin City is not a bad alternative to the City of Angels. And let’s be honest — there are more Raiders fans here than Rams and Chargers fans combined anyway. Although the Rams fanbase is growing because they’re looking good again this season and Aaron Darnold can probably tackle all Decepticons, starting with Megatron. Still, the Rams are still second to the Raiders in L.A.

But why are you even talking about Covid-19 riddled NFL right now, Haydee, you might be asking? You do have two other sports institutions you can talk about. Good point.

How about them Lakers, right? I mean, how about that win!

Relax, I’m not a fair-weathered fan, even though that introduction sounded like I had no clue what the fuck happened almost two weeks ago. I know what happened almost two weeks ago. LeBron James and Anthony Davis impersonated supernovas, exploded in their greatness and won a championship in honor of one the city’s brightest stars EVER. Chants of Kobe serenaded outside of Staples Center afterwards, even though the Lakers won it all in Orlando. I watched the celebrations on TV though coz, you know — pandemic. But my husband and I went outside for a few minutes and listened to the unsolicited fireworks that rang through the night. All damn night. Fans have been waiting ten years for another championship, but I really think the whole world was rallying since January 26 for the Lakers to win one for Kobe. I’m sure Miami Heat fans will disagree with me on this and to that I say — Jimmy Butler is. a. beast. on. the. court! One for Mamba.

And for some reason I just thought of Sedale Threatt and Nick Van Exel. Remember them? My goodness, those years post-Magic’s retirement! Talk about depressing!

Speaking of Magic Johnson — my ass was literally crying when he announced that he had to suddenly retire from the NBA in 1991 due to being HIV-positive. Now he’s part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, a Major League Baseball team. Talk about someone living up to their name.

And how about our Dodgers being in the World Series for the third time in four years; giving Angelenos something else to be anxious about this year. This is good anxious, right? Good anxiety. Is that possible or is that an oxymoron? I’m not sure. Either way, since we’re already bathed with daily anxiety, I figured participating in this one at least brings guaranteed joy whatever the outcome; via shared team love with family and friends.

And I honestly think they WILL win it all this year.

And when that happens and the Lakers and the Dodgers are NBA & MLB Champions, respectively — after such a shitty year, this would be the closest thing to heaven 2020 will come for many Angelenos.
